Description:

This small creeping weed is common all over India, usually in marshy areas. Vallarai looks like brain's shape. Flowers minute, pinkish red, 3-6 in a cluster. Fruits are small.

Uses :

Enhance the memory power ,skin diseases, ulcerations, chronic and callous, scrofulous and syphilitic with gummatous infiltration (secondary and tertiary syphilis), in chronic and obstinate eczema, psoriasis, leprosy, malaria and fevers, epilepsy, insanity etc., 

How to Use:

For internal administration, the powder, the fluid extract and the syrup (Brahma rasayanam), are suitable, and for external application are employed the powder, the juice, the plaster, and the ointment . For skin eruptions supposed to arise from heat of blood, juice is applied as a lep generally combined with cadamba bark, ghee and black cumin. For mental weakness, for improving memory, powdered leaf in small doses is given with milk. For diseases of the skin, blood and nervous system, among children, and to cure gonorrhoea, jaundice and fevers, fresh leaf juice with milk and liquorice is recommended .

Description:

It is found throughout tropical India and Ceylon. The leaves are green unequally toothed. The flowers are solitary, yellow in colour. The fruit is a rounded capsule. Normally it grows in waste lands.

Uses :

Fevers, chest affections, gonorrhoea, laxative in nature chronic inflammation of urethra and urinary bladder.

How to Use:

Juice of Leaves and ghee are given in catarrhal, bilious diarrhoea. Seeds are used in decoction in piles and coughs. They are distinctly useful in gonorrhoea, gleet and chronic cystitis. Finely powdered Seeds can be given as laxative and expectorant. The leaves of this plant soothe and protect the alimentary tract and relieve inflamation, they are given as decoction for bronchitis, diarrhoea, inflamation of the bladder, urethra, and fevers. The decoction of the bark promotes the flow of urine.

Description:

Common all over India in dry and sandy areas, plentiful in Western Peninsular, the Deccan and Coromandal Coast.

Uses :

Coughs, gonorrhoea, dropsy, leucorrhoea, dysentery, diarrhoea.

How to Use:

As gargle it is useful in spongy gums, relaxed sore-throat and as wash in haemorrhagic ulcers and wounds. "Babul bark in combination with Mango bark, boiled for about half an hour in a pint of water forms a good  preparation for mouth-wash." Juice of bark mixed with breast-milk is dropped into the eye in conjunctivitis.  Burnt bark and burnt almond shell both pulverised and mixed with salt make a good tooth-powder.

Description:

Common annual shrub in Indian gardens and waste places throughout the plains of India. The leaf petioles are long and slender. The leaves are oval in shape. The numerous tiny maroon coloured flowers are found on several pendulous stalks and hence the common name known as cat tail

Uses :

Ulcers, pain of snake-bite, skin diseases, asthma, pneumonia, rheumatism, scabies, vermifuge. 

How to Use:

Leaves posses laxative properties ; "are used as a substitute for senega" ; are used in the form of powder or decoction ; mixed with garlic they are used as anthelmintic in worms. Mixed with common salt they are applied to scabies ; and their juice mixed with oil forms an application in rheumatic arthritis. Powder of dry leaves is used in bed sores. Hakims treat cases of acute mania and hysteria in early stages by the following mode - Take  one ounce of fresh juice of the leaves and dissolve in it six grains of common salt ; drop a little of this mixture in each nostril every six hours from morning and then place the patient under cold shower baths for three mornings regularly ; this gives relief from running rose.

Description:

Small herb found all over India. It is quite easily identified when fully matured. Long spikes bearing several very small greenish-white flowers which stand upright.

Uses :

Stomach ache and bowel complaints, piles, boils, skin eruptions, diarrhoea and dysentery.

How to Use:

The leaf juice is also useful in stomach ache and bowel complaints, piles, boils, skin eruptions etc, in large doses it produces abortion or labour pains. A decoction of powdered leaves with honey or sugarcandy, is useful in the early stages of diarrhoea and dysentery. Fresh leaves ground into a paste with jaggery or mixed with black pepper and garlic and made into pills are used as antiperiodic especially in quartan fevers ; leaves rubbed into a paste with water are applied with much benefit to bites of poisonous insects, wasps, bees etc. A pinch of the root-powder with a pinch of pepper powder and honey is a nice remedy for cough. Seed rubbed with rice water is given in bleeding piles. Payasam or kheer made of seeds in milk is a good remedy for diseased brain. Root taken on Sunday conjoined with pushya naksbitra after bathing and kept hanging in a corner is used in stimulating labour pains and expendting delivery.

Description:

A semi-aquatic perennial cultivated in damp marshy places in India and Burma. Exceedingly common in Manipur and the Naga Hills, and on the edges of lakes and streams. The underground stem or rhizome is succulent and yellow on the inside. The inflorescence is borne on the apical or terminal part of a long stalk.

Uses :

Cough, fever, capillary bronchitis, colic etc.,

How to Use:

The root burnt to cinder, mixed with cocoanut or castor oil and smeared over the abdomen relieves flatulent colic. The powder of the burnt root-stock in 3 grain doses relieves infantile diarrhoea and colic. It is used as a diuretic in calculous affections and as an anthelmintic to expel worms in children. The following is a valuable compound powder useful in dyspepsia and as a stimulaut in low fevers, epilepsy and insanity - Take equal parts of Acorus calamus root, Asafoetida, Ans, Long pepper, Black pepper, Ginger, Chebulic myrobalan and Sonchal salt. Powder and mix them well together. Dose - 20 to 60 grains.

Description:

It is a well known plant. Dense shrub has white flowers are borne in short dense axillary spikes.

Uses :

Bronchitis, leprosy, heart troubles, asthma, sore eyes, gonorrhoea, fever, leucoderma, jaundice, difficult urination, abortion.

How to Use:

The decoction of the root is useful in treating bronchitis, asthma, vomitting, sore eyes, fevers and gonnorhoea. The decoction of the fruit also helps in taking care of bronchitis. The decoction of the leaves promotes menstrual flow and is useful in gonorrhoea. The decoction of the flowers purifies the blood and improves in circulation. It also checks painful and difficult urination and jaundice. The decoction of the leaves and the roots of this plant is considered as a very efficacious remedy which is normally administered, along with ginger, for all sorts of coughs. The dried leaves are rolled into the form of cigarettes and smoked to cure asthma. The juice extracted from the leaves is used for diarrhoea and dysentery. The leaves, roots and especially the flowers are antispasmodic or have those qualities which prevent or cure spasms. The bitter juice from the leaves is administered in infusion to expel worms from the body. The fresh flowers are used in ophthalmia or the severe inflammation of the eye or conjunctiva.
